Independent refuse study proposed
> An independent- working party to investigate; alternatives to the metropolitan refuse scheme will be set up if the Waimairi County Council follows the recommendation of its works, reserves and traffic. committee. At,a meeting of. the committee last evening, the County. Chairman (Mr. D. B. Rich) .moved that the working party be set up. He said the council would have to face the possibility that the scheme as presented by the Metropolitan Refuse Committee might not go ahead. The scheme is subject to a. hearing. He said that the party
would have to be “completely independent”' of the refuse committee and that he did not think tee council should discuss the scheme presented by tee committee. / , q Some councillors .supported the setting up'of the party because it was a “com-mon-sense insurance / proposal.” If the schetne was rejected an alternative could be provided to stop rubbish "piling up in the streets.” Cr W. T. Rice opposed tee proposal, saying that alternatives should not be investigated until after the hearing. Other councils will be invited to help set up the independent party.
