13 p.c. rise for dairy workers
PA ' Wellington Dairy' factory workers will get a 13.7 per cent wage rise. 5. Negotiations for . the award, which covers about 6000 workers, ended last evening in Wellington. . The settlement, is backdated to the end of tee old award bn ■ July ' 12, which makes the increase effectively about 14 per cent. When .negotiations resumed '• yesterday the union was .■ still ostensibly holding to a claim of 26 per cent, which it said had been based on the industry’s ability to pay. The employers had earlier offered 13.5 per cent — the same amount as the general drivers’ award.
The secretary of the Dairy Workers’ Union (Mr R. McMillan) said the union had been guided by “certain advice” from the Federation of Labour. But he said there had been no real pressure as a result of the dairy workers’ position at the head of the 198081 wage queue. . Mr McMillan said he felt the ability to pay argument was still valid.
