‘Urgent action’ call
PA Auckland The Labour shadow Minister of .Police (Mr. M. A. Connelly) has called for ‘‘urgent and effective action” by the Government after the decision to shift police from other parts of New Zealand to Auckland.' /'/ • ~/,./ Mr Connelly said the shift of manpower would; neither overcome the problems faced by the police in dealing with tee law and order problem, nor counter the underlying causes of crime.
“The police have been asked to do the impossible. They are being asked ■ to
police a society which is deteriorating economically and socially,, and bringing in its wake mounting crime and violence on an. unprecedented scale.” ’ • ••• - Mr Connelly also called for a review of deterrent penalties and said that, where necessary, they should be stiffened for rape; and child molestation, intimidation, thuggery, ■ violence and murder. ■
Crime prevention programmes must be stepped up and action on television violence and pornography was overdue, he said. /
