League suspension until July, 1981
A Papanui rugby league player, John Hines, has been suspended until midway through the 1981 season, the stand-down period to begin immediately. At a meeting of the Canterbury Rugby League board of control last evening Hines was found guilty of having Jostled a referee (Mr Trevor Brott) during a senior second division match on July 12. Hines was also accused of having threatened Mr Brott in a public place, some weeks after the original incident. He failed to appear at the meeting last night, although requested to do so by the board’s chairman (Mr J. A. Anderson). The Papanui team of
which Hines was a member refused to return,to the~field after half-time of that match against; Marist-Western Suburbs at Bishopdale Park — and was subsequently withdrawn from; the competition. ' ' . Another Papanui player, Robert Schwass, had been sent off during the first half and has not yet attended aj judicial hearing. He is suspended until he does so. Hines’ suspension until July 1..1981, was the end result of a number of deliberations by the board. The Canterbury referees* association had appealed two weeks ago when no action had been taken against Hines. " '}
