Debates series
A series of six debates from the Auckland City Council Chamber begins screening on “Contact” tonight on Network Two. Each programme avoids hard-line political or current issues and concentrates on topics which, although having serious underlying possibilities, encourage witty and sophisticated oratory. Under the chairmanship of the former Attorney General, Dr Martyn Finlay, Q.C., the debates follow the strict disciplines of Westminster-style procedures. The outcome of each debate will be judged by a division of the audience.
Tonight’s debate is “That Democracy Is Our Real Disease.” For the affirmative are Marilyn Waring, M.P., and the broadcaster, Sharon Crosby. For the negative, the broadcaster, Jim Hopkins, and David Lange, M.P.
