Petrol stations kept busy
Fine weather, school holidays and the Government’s lifting of week-end petrol restrictions made it a busy two days for some service stations.
Relishing the summerlike weather, motorists were quick to make use of the extra hours service stations a.re allowed to be open. “We have been busy since we opened at 7 a.m. on Saturday. Only since 5 p.m. today has it started to quieten dowrt,” ' said the manager of Wigra.m Ser? vices (Mr G. Smith) yesterday. “.It was quiet on Saturday afternoon but today has been good for trading,” said Mr B. A. Page, of the Motukarara Store. “Many people have not been out for so long and the lifting of the restrictions allows them to go for a drive on a Sunday. They were so
pleased to be able to get out.”
Blue Star Taxis, which is open 24 hours, said that business hr.d been brisk throughout the week-end. “It is too early to see what the reinstatement of week-end trading will do to the trade)” said the president ■ of the Motor Trade Association (Mr P. Buist).
“Many garages in Christchurch were busy on Saturday morning but trade in the afternoon tapered off. The extra hours at the week-end could mean a dropping off of mid-week sales. It will take about a month for us to find out any new trends. Things are a bit special at the moment with the school holidays.”. About 40 garages in the greater Christchurch area opened during the weekend.
