Women upset in road race win
PA Timaru Women runners caused an upset by taking the major placings in the Pleasant Point to Temuka road race, on Saturday. The 16km race, which attracted about 200 runners from throughout the South Island was won by Jeanette Holland, of Ashburton, in a time of 78min 3sec.
Among other women front markers, J. Forrester (St Martins) was second and P. Hogarth (Christchurch Toe H) third.
The contest for fastest time saw a keen tussle between the scratch runners A. Moir, M. Hurring and P. Crosby, of the Dunedin Ariki Club, and B. Beath (Dunedin Presbyterian). Hurring was first in 52min ssec. Official placings: J. Holland (Ashburton) 78min 3sec 1, J. Forrester (St Martins) 78min 23sec 2. P. Hogarth (Christchurch Toe H) 79min 17sec 3, G. McClintock (Leith) 80min 7sec 4, B. Bull (St Martins) 80min 24sec 5, G. Lihou (St Martins) 80min 56sec 6.
The Southland Island road race championships were Saturday in ideal weather.
