‘Unfit’ Botham criticised
NZPA London The England cricket captain, lan Botham, has come under fire in the Centenary Test for his captaincy methods, and his alleged lack of fitness. Botham, aged 24, has been criticised in British newspapers during the last week for being overweight He is reckoned to be 10kg too heavy, at 100 kg, and there have been suggestions that a back injury has. taken most of the sting out of his bowling. • On the first day, in which Australia made 227 for two wickets, Botham bowled 22 overs for 89 runs — twice as expensive as the other main England bowlers, Mike Hendrick, Chris Old, and John Emburey. From the look of his action, he was relying more on arm movement than a full shoulder turn and an arched back..
