Trainer pleased with run
NZPA Melbourne Boom horse My Brown Jug would be hard to beat in-any of his future races, according to Christchurch trainer, Peter Jones. His optimistic prediction included the , $205,000 Caulfield ■ Cup (2400 m for which the four-year-old firmed to 4-1 favourite after a niighty run in the J. J. Liston; Stakes (1400 m at Sandown on Saturday. “He’ll be hard to beat in every weight-for-age race he is entered for now as they are all 1600 m or more,” said Jones from Mornington yesterday morning. My Brown Jug, Little Brown Jug in New Zealand, was also a worthy favourite for the Caulfield Cup, to be run on October 18, he said. “I can’t see much else that will beat him.” Jones said he was “really pleased” with My Brown Jug’s race on Saturday in which he flashed home for third to Grey Sapphire with second place going to last year’s Caulfield Cup winner, Mighty Kingdom. Grey which won the Freeway Stakes last week, went to the line two lengths clear of Mighty Kingdom while My Brown Jug, the second favourite for the race at 5-1, was just’ a long neck further back. “We could have beaten him in another few strides,” said Jones. Mighty Kingdom was running his last race on Saturday. His trainer, Tommy Smith, revealed afterwards that the stallion ivas being retired to stud.
My Brown Jug was hampered during the race by the erratic Turf Ruler which lost his rider, Mick Dittman, soon after the start. Jones said My Brown Jug would next start in the §25,000 Craiglee Stakes at Flemington on September 13 and probably follow that with the $30,000 Feehan Stakes at Moonee Valley a week later. Both are 1600 m weight-for-age events. Bunvaro, also having his first Australian start on Saturday, finished last in the J. J. Liston, suffering a bleeding attack during the race.
