Badminton Many defections in final round

t '..' The absence of some top players and the number of defaults marked the final round of the A grade badminton championships at Skellerup Hall on. Saturday. One team somewhat depleted was the second-placed side. Hagjrtey 11, which missed its two top -men. Brian Williams was ill and Dave Bell had pulled stomach muscles. Their repalcements, Allan ■ Overton and Allan Drewett, both • \ acquitted themselves well, and •. (though they lost in straight i ■ games to Geoff Miller and An- • -drew Duckmanton (Railway I) .- ■ respectively, Hagley II was happy ■ to win three of the contests. One ’' of them was an entertaining : • - women’s doubles with Rosey Kerr and Karen Rogers getting - ■’.the better of Jane Clarke and Robyn Erskine. Railway I finished with a con- .. vincing 35-point win in the com_petition, with Hagley II only '• just holding off the club’s No. 1 . 1 side by a bare point. j ' ■ That late run by Hagley I came ' in a close 5-3 victory over Knox e.which , won only one of the Singles, but made a bold showing in the doubles. Knox’s singles win was provided by Lynda Kitchingham who met a B grade player, Robyn White. Miss White gave spirited opposition in the singles and, in particular, the doubles. In the end the over-all result of the contest depended on the men’s doubles between Hagley I’s David Ross and Charles Wasley, and the more “seasoned” combination of Warren Edge- ■ cumbe and Eoin Kirkland for j. - Knox. A Knox success would - 'have required a games count- ' ( Ross and' Wasley quickly estab--'lished their superiority in the 'first game but Kirkland and a flu-stricken Edgecumbe gritted ■: .'their teeth and got things going I ' well to win the second. In the '* -third, though, the younger pairing was on top from the start i' ' and looked v;ery sharp. r ' ' There was a little tragedy in 8 ’the section II contest between

the two South Brighton teams. Brent Wilson (South Brighton I), making a return from injury after a five-week absence, went over on his knee late in the very' even first game against John Barker. He was unable to play the second game of the match and also had to default his two doubles. Easily the closest of the singles' was that between Christine Campbell and Lori Ellis (also an A grade squash player) with the former shading her opponent 12-11 in the third game. Once again both Ross Campbell and Paul Boatwood were missing from the South Brighton line-ups. In another section II match Railway climbed ahead of Hagley 111 into third place, taking advantage of three defaults by the Hagley' team. University,'in section 111, was also one woman short, and the only three matches it lost against Christchurch were defaults. The best match here was the mixed doubles which went to setting in the third.
