Southland loses
PA Hastings Hawke’s Bay scored a minor upset .when they beat Southland, 27-16, in a first division championship at Nelson Park, Hastings, on Saturday. The win was Hawkes Bay’s second in the competition and brought a bait to a series of six losses this season.
Southland, after its win In mid-week against North Auckland, opened the match confidently but failed to use its superior position in the backs. Star of the match for Hawke’s Bay was the centre, Ricky Allen, who gave a dazzling display and was the focal point of Hawke’s Bay attack. He
made the chances for each of the Hawkes.Bay tries with a brilliant movement and fine passing. Southland’s best players were the flanker and captain, Ken Stewart, and the prop, Doug Murcott, who impressed with his barging runs from the lineouts.
For Hawke’s Bay, which led 15-4 at half-time, scorers were Scott Wedd (two) and Craig McCracken (try), and Kevin White kicked two penalties, three conversions and a dropped goal. Southland’s points came from tries by Jeff Gardner and Ken Stewart and Geoff Valli kicked two penalties and a conversion.
