Shop trading hours

Sir, — L. V. Anson and friends (August 30) have obviously not thought much about the subject of weekend shopping. They probably like this, .convenience 'to themselves. As for “creating jobs,”, have they not heard of the probable replacement of full-time shop assistants by part-time ones; of the unavoidable price rises to offset added staff costs (inflationary); of the disruption of the time employees can devote to their families; of the advantage this move would give large chains over the small dairy businesses relying to a large extent on week-end income; of the damage to Saturday trading in New Brighton where much money has been spent to modernise and make pleasant the shopping area for week-end shoppers. The thoughtless majority. would do well to consider such consequences carefully instead of unloading their responsibilities once more on “union officials.” — Yours, etc.,

MARGARET MAYER. August 30, 1980.
