Waikato steals show again

NZPA Dunedin For the second successive year, New Zealand's representative at the "Miss World” contest will be “Miss Waikato.” Miss Vicki Lee Hemi, aged 18, a student teacher from Hamilton, won the title from 13 other contestants from throughout the country, and will be New Zealand’s representative at the “Miss World” contest to be held in London.

A near-capacity crowd at the Regent Theatre roared approval when the announcement was made, and Miss Hemi stepped forward to receive her crown from her predecessor, Miss Nikki Duckworth, another Waikato representative. In addition to the London trip, Miss Hemi received $3OOO in cash, a car, a wardrobe valued at $5OOO, as well as an opossum .coat,.a suede suit and a ball gown. The runner up to “Miss New Zealand” was “Miss Wellington,” Tracy Mclntyre, a 22-year-old model, who received $5OO in cash.

“Miss Waikato,” a clear favourite with the crowd, was overcome by the announcement and told the audience tearfully' in her victory speech that she would be proud to be an ambassador for New Zealand.

A group of feminists gathered outside the theatre with placards before the show, to express their disapproval of the event.
