Child care centres
Sir, —All parents who use child care centres must be only too aware that costs are very high indeed — sometimes prohibitive: However, there is a variation in the types of centres available — the A grade indicating only that the Social Welfare Department minimum standards are adhered to. I agree with S. Wright (August 27) that high cost is riot necessarily an indication of quality but know very well that without relatively high charges to users, the quality of child care my infant receives while I work would not be possible. Incidentally, costs of S4O a week mainly apply to the care of under twos, where staff-child ratios must of necessity be higher and so more expensive. Child care is not often a profitable venture; if it were there would be more centres available to those parents who would choose to use them.—Yours, etc.,
JANET K. DELLAN. August 28, 1980.
