Shop trading hours
Sir, — Six of us were in a bar when the subject of Saturday trading arose and all agreed it would be a ’ good thing. To the question if any one of us had heard, first: hand, an opposing opinion, the answer was, no, not first hand. We agreed to meet in a week’s time. We met as arranged and had still been unable to find an opponent of extended shopping hours. Now, we wonder, is this just another contrived controversy? Are the vociferous and fearful few outflanking the vast and silent majority yet again? Apart from union officials, who seem to fear any move which might create jobs, just who is trying to frighten whom? — Yours, etc., L. V. ANSON, Kaikoura. August 28, 1980.
