PA London I The pound sterling rose to its highest level for five years against other major currencies yesterday despite deepening industrial recession in Britain’ that pushed unemployment above two million for the first time since 1936, The pound’s tradeweighted index <>. against a group? of other, key currencies rose to 76.2 per cent of its 1971 value, the highest since early 1975.
