Stevens to surrenders
NZPA Port Vila The Espiritu Santo rebel leader, Mr Jimmy Stevens, told Vanuatu Government officials yesterday that he would surrender this morning, ending the rebellion on the island.
Mr Stevens yesterday met the officials in the Santo capital of Luganville to arrange the terms of the surrender, then he and his lieutenants returned to their stronghold of Vanafo to inform their followers.
The Government spokesman (Mr John Beasant) said that Mr Stevens had said there should be no problems. If the surrender took place as planned there would be no military action.
