Timaru wool prices firm

PA Timaru The record offering at the Timaru wool sale yesterday, 20,165 bales, was up 35 per cent on previous August sales. Prices generally were firm. , The big offering resulted mainly from increased sheep numbers, heavier wool weights, good feed conditions, recent dry weather for shearing, and more growers selling at Timaru. The official report said that crossbred oddments and crutchings were 2| per cent up on the Dunedin sale last week. Halfbred fleece was firm in sellers’ favour, Halfbred skirtings and crossbred fleeces were generally unchanged, crossbred second-shear firm, and crossbred skirtings in sellers’ favour. The main competition came from China, the Middle East and Eastern Europe. The Wool Board bid on 33 per cent of the catalogue and bought or had passed to it 1460 bales, or 7.3 per cent.

The fleece wools were well grown and sound with good length, but colour was not as good as usual at an August sale. Oddments were much heavier in condition, with more discolouration and cottiness, and affected by mud. Generally the fleece was high yielding. The offering was: Fine fleece 15.46 per cent; crossbred 34.88 per cent; second-shear 7.15 per cent; crutchings 14.29 per cent; bellies 12.74 per cent; odd? ments 14.5 per cent; plus miscellaneous 0.98 per cent.. The adjusted weighted
