Southland floods ease
PA Invercargill As the floodwaters receded in Southland yesterday, workers began clean-up and reconstruction work which will cost several hundred thousand dollars.
The crisis has passed at Invercargill Airport. Some water from the nearby Taramoa ponding area came over the hastily improved airport stopbanks, but it was only half the quantity that put the airport out of use during the October, 1978, floods. A spokesman for the Southland Catchment Board said the levels of all main rivers were dropping. Stopbanks at Dipton, Te Anau and Mataura were the main jobs needing attention.
