Signal was Ministry marker

The mystery behind the “international distress signal” spotted on the Rakaia River shinglebed on Wednesday has been solved. Fourteen men and a . police dog were involved for about l six hours before finding out that it was a marker, installed in July, by the Water and Soil Division of the Ministry of Works. The large cross of plastic strips—forming a recognised sign meaning “unable to proceed,” has been used before by the Ministry as an aid to aerial photography. “Search and Rescue, Lands and Survey, arid Ministry of Works personnel will be getting together shortly to sort this out. We obviously cannot have this happen again,” said Sergeant G. P. Kenna of ' the Ashburton 1 police, yesterday.
