Aust. old-timers win

NZPA London Godfrey Evans, aged 60, put on his pads and gloves again for a special occasion yesterday and stumped two of his Old Australian cricket rivals.

The former England wicketkeeper dismissed Bob Simpson, and lan Redpath, a mere 39, in a nostalgic match between Old England and Old Australia.

But Simpson had the last word. He made 75 before Evans whipped off his bails, and laid the foundation for Old Australia to win the one-innings match by seven wickets.

Old England made 230 for five in the 50 overs allowed. Old Australia responded with 231 for three.

Neil Harvey, looking portly’ and coming up to 52, made the winning hit for the Australians.

Two fast bowlers of yesteryear — Freddie Trueman, aged 49, and Frank “Typhoon” Tyson, aged 50 — bowled a half-dozen overs each for England but failed to take a wicket.

Colin Cowdrey, a former England captain, now aged 48, batted with glimpses of his old-time elegance to hit 44. Ken Barrington, aged 50, made 45 before Harvey, wearing dark glasses, caught him out.

The match at Kennington Oval was a prelude to the five-day centenary test between England and Australia.
