Arming of police
Sir, — I have read with concern your Editorial on arming the police (August 25). It is obvious that the public are under the mistaken belief that if the police are armed the criminal will follow suit.. This is a very convenient argument for those opposed to police carrying arms and who prefer to remain with their heads in the sand rather than face the facts of life. Unfortunately,' to the constable on the street this is little comfort when he is likely to be faced with a violent situation involving firearms or offensive weapons, resulting in him being injured or worse. We have allowed him the luxury of carrying a 25cm. baton — a rather primitive weapon which clearly demonstrates how far mankind has progressed and how out of touch with reality people are — Yours, etc., M. D. HOUGHTON. August 26, 1980.
