Retail stocks up
PA Wellington Retail stocks in New Zealand oh June 30 were worth 17.5 per cent more than stocks held a year earlier, according to a survey by the Statistics Department. The Government Statistician (Dr J.’ H. Darwin) said the value increased only 1.8 per cent during the June quarter, but when corrected for seasonal variations it was 2.2 per cent higher. The total value of
stocks on hand at June 30 was $1173.1 million, or $1178.4 million when seasonally adjusted. The year’s biggest increase was in household appliances and electrical goods, stocks of which, rose in value 27.7 per cent t0'593.7 million. There were also big increases in furnishings and hardware goods (both up 26.6 per cent). The smallest increase during the year was for apparel stocks, up 8.3 per cent to $153.2 million.
