More buses to West Coast
More buses will be running between Christchurch and the West Coast after a big timetable reshuffle by Railways Road Services. A Monday to Friday service will leave Christchurch for Westport at 10.40 a.m. This will replace the existservice which leaves Christchurch at 8.15 a.m. on Monday, Wednesday, and Friday. The present 9 a.m. West-port-Christchurch service will also run five days a week.
' The service from Greymouth to Reefton to connect with the Westport-Christ-church bus will leave at 8.50 a.m.
The timetable changes have been approved by the No. 9 Transport Licensing Authority (Mr D. L. Hogan). Several other changes have been made to West Coast services, but the manager of Road Services in Christchurch (Mr P. Schreiber) said that most towns would still have two services each day.
Mr, Schreiber said that Ross would be the area affected the most by the timetable changes. It had lost its local services. Ross Would now be serviced by buses travelling between Hokitika and Fox Glacier. Between $40,000 and $50,000 would be saved each year by the timetable changes on the West Coast, said Mr Schreiber. The direct Waiau-Christ-church service would be scrapped.- It would 'be replaced with a feeder service from Waiau to Culverden to connect with the bus from Hanmer Springs.. A date had not been set for the introduction of the new timetable but “it won’t be before the end of next month,” said Mr Schreiber, A new timetable for buses running between Christchurch and Invercargill was also being planned, but Mr Schreiber said that he did not know how long it would be before it was finalised.
