Eight killed in rock-fall
NZPA-Reuter Tokyo Eight adults and four children were crushed to death on Thursday when a section of rocky cliff near the summit of Mount Fuji broke off and fell on a path, the police said.
At least 30 people were injured when rocks, some of them 2m in diameter, swept down the sandy sloping path. When the accident occurred several thousand people were on the summit of the 3776 m dormant volcano and on several twisting lava ashcovered paths.
More than 200 soldiers and policemen were mobilised for the rescue, using a helicopter and vehicles. A paved road climbs the mountainside to 2400 m.
