Lyttelton ferry
Sir, — After reading the correspondence on the Lyttelton ferry issue, I am not surprised that Mrs Ann Hercus should have based her costing on a one-way trip between Lyttelton and Wellington. In 30 years on the “Planet of the Sheep” 1 have never heard of anyone who does not consider that all forms of inter-island transport exist for the sole and exclusive purpose of conveying South Islanders and their goods to and from the South Island. Would it be asking too much to expect all these amateur shipping magnates and cost accountants to make such a giant intellectual leap forward (for South Islanders) as to consider the possibilities of traffic in the opposite direction? It is funny, really. North Islanders, always regarded the old Wellington - Lyttelton service as the Lyttelton ferry, whereas South Islanders regarded the Lyttelton - Web lington service as the Lyttelton ferry. Maybe some child psychologist could explain. — Yours, etc.,
A. BROWN. August 13, 1980.
