South Africa and sport
Sir, — The Olympic ideal is to encourage people to develop their full athletic potential by having equal opportunity to practise their sport and compete in open competition. This ideal cannot exist in South Africa because of the racist laws of apartheid which deny equal opportunity to people because of their skin colour. The New Zealand Rugby Union and National Government brought shame on New Zealand in 1976 by playing racist sport in South Africa. This blow against Olympic principles was followed by the National Government’s destruction of our 1980 Olympic team ; because the Government wanted to protest about Russian inter-
vention in Afghanistan. Are the Nats going to protest against South Africa’s invasions of Namibia and Angola and against its inhuman racist laws by refusing entry to New Zealand of ■ the racist Springboks in 1981? Will the Rugby Union bosses ever wake up to what - good sport is all about? — Yours, etc., ANTHONY BROWN. August 12, 1980.
