Teaching jobs
Sir, — G. C. Bliss (August 9) raised the question: Is teaching a vocation, profession or job? Is it rewarding or frustrating, challenging or boring? I liken it to a mother trying to feed wholesome but unpalatable food to a toddler. The baby has other things in mind, spits it out and refuses to eat. A teacher facing a class of unwilling learners is in the same predicament. Encourage, bribe coax, reward, wheedle praise and entertain, and many pupils still .fail to respond positively, no matter what tactic is. employed. So like
motherhood, teaching is sometimes rewarding _ but often frustating, sometimes challenging but tedious and boring too. Nonetheless, these antitheses afford the very variety for which teaching must be commended — Yours, etc. BARBARA ROBINSON August 13, 1980.
