Liquor polls

Sir, — Re “Liquor polls wasting time and money” (August 14), the real waste of time, money and energy is by the ratepayers and taxpayers who have not been informed of proposals in time to make an objection to such a tavern or hotel. In the Mairehau-St Albans area with which I am concerned, it was only when a friend saw an advertisement at the bottom of a public notices column (“The Press,” November 11, 1979) that we had our first reliable information. We (residents of the area) took action immediately but we should have been informed in 1977. The problems are largely created by the system under which the Licensing Control Commission works. When is a public notice not a public notice? — When the notice is on a limited distribution list. Are people aware that ratepayers who take action ■ must meet all costs themselves whereas the other side can claim expenses against income tax? — Yours, etc., ■
