Trading on Australian stock exchanges ended on the upswing yesterday as a uranium supply contract with Finland, and stronger copper prices, helped buyers to shrug off pre : Budget jitters.
News of Queensland Mines’ 900 tonne yellowcake deal with a Finnish' utility pushed the stock 30c higher to 880 c and other uranium issues, Peko and Pancontinental, followed suit with 6c rises to 886 c and 746 c respectively. The partners in the Ashton joint diamond venture also came under buying pressure near the close, and Ashton mining finished 15c higher at 295 c.
Ashtons partner, SRA, which has announced plans to buy Texas Gulf’s iron ore interests in Western Australia, rose 10c at 576 c. Oils were subdued, although Strata managed a 5c gain to 270 c in continuing response to tests at its Woodada No. 2 well, and industrials were little changed. In major trading, Western Mining firmed 2c to 598 c, MIM was 8c higher at 518 c, Utah lost 6c to 530 c, EZ shed 4c to 666 c, Bougainville was steady at 250 c, Woodside was firm at 300 c, CSR lost 8c to 760 c, the Bank of NSW scored a cent to 305 c and the National Bank rose 5c to 270 c.
