Good snowfalls
North-west winds and rain this week caused a general deterioration at most skifields, according to the New Zealand Snow Centre, but the cool change late on Wednesday brought good snowfalls and improved conditions.
Snow reports provided by the centre yesterday (all facilities operating unless stated): — Coronet Peak. — 2cm of fresh snow August 13 on 52cm base packed powder; good ski-ing; chains required as road icy. Treble Cone. —15 cm fresh snow August 13 on average base of 90 to 100 cm; good powder ski-ing. Lake Ohau. —10 cm of new snow August 13 on 80cm base of groomed powder.
Lake Tekapo. —15 cm of new snow August 13 on 80cm base; good conditions with groomed slopes.
Mount Dobson. — Fresh snow on good base.
Erewhon. — Fresh snow on Wednesday from norwest; good base.
Mount Hutt. —15 cm new powder snow August 13 on good packed base; chains required upper rbad.
Porter Heights. ■ —15 cm good heavy snow August 13 on 60cm packed base; main runs groomed; chains, to be carried.
Mount Cook. — Good falls of fresh snow from northwest last few days; good conditions for heli-ski, glacier ski-ing and nordic.
Amuri. — Bcm fresh snow on good base; chains required, Broken River. —12 cm new snow on packed base; chains required.
Mount Cheeseman. — 20cm fresh snow on packed base; chains required, Craigiebum. — Bcm fresh snow on August 13 on good base; chains required.
The Mount Cook ski region reports 90cm of fresh powder on the heli-ski Ben Ohau range and 60 cm new snow on Tasman Glacier which will operate weather permitting.
