Minister backs family courts assn
PA Wellington The Minister of Justice, ;(Mr McLay) has commended the proposal to set up an Australasian association of ifamilj’ courts as a sequel to [the first Australasian conference on family law at [Queenstown last month. “I believe this will further enhance the status of those who practise in this very important field of law,” he said. A steering committee had been set up to prepare a constitution and obtain a wide membership in Australia and New Zealand, membership being available to judges and
! magistrates dealing with family law, lawyers, family court counsellors, family court registrars, accredited marriage counsellors and departmental Officers involved in family Conflict. Mr McLay had earlier told the Queenstown conference that a bill to set up family courts would soon be enacted.
Mr Justice Watson, senior judge of the Family Court, of Australia, will serve as the first president of the new association, with Judge Callander of the District. Court at Auckland as one of the two vice-presidents.
