Boys’ High loses chess
Christchurch Boys’ High School will be hard-pressed to retain its A grade title in “The Press” schools’ chess competition after both its teams were beaten in the first round of the play-off.
The evenness of the competition has been a feature of the tournament and three matches in both' A grade contests needed adjudication. St Andrew’s A, which had beaten Christchurch A in the preliminary round, repeated that success against a strengthened Christchurch side, and Shirley, the champion in 1977, had a good win against Christchurch B. St Andrew’s, and Shirley meet in a crucial match this week.
Shirley B and St Andrew’s B, the top teams in the B
grade, met in the eighth round and they drew their contest. They might well re-: play in the final at. St Andrew’s on August 20,-although Ashburton is still in the race.
Rangi Ruru played exceedingly well to prevent.the C grade leader,. Cobham, from gaining maximum points for the first time and Christchurch G.H.S. scored- a surprise victory against Casebrook..
