Shipping News Extensions to Tiwai wharf likely
With Government approval for a third potline at the Tiwai smelter, the Southland Harbour Board is looking towards expansion of the Tiwai wharf, to meet the demands of additional cargo from the smelter and new industries which are expected to be established in the region.
A board spokesman said that the third potline would lift smelted aluminium capacity from 150,000 tonnes to 225,000 tonnes per year, and prospects appear good for the establishment of other heavy industry. Quayside features at present include a 1265-metre causeway and a 200 m berth. The wharf, which was opened in 1971. can handle vessels of about 35,000 deadweight tonnes. When the entrance channel is widened, deepened, and dredged, bulk carriers ranging to 50,000 deadweight tonnes will be able to use the wharf. . The board is also considering extending the present wharf by 200 m, to accommodate another conventional, vessel. . ■ The project, which is estimated to cost about $4 million, may be completed before the third potline goes into production in 1932. Besides the dredging and wharf extension work, the board is contemplating the installation of a second _ vacuum unloader for the handling oi alumina, coke, and pitch.
