National candidate withdraws
PA Auckland J The number of candi- • dates seeking the National Party nomination for the East Coast Bays by-elec-tion next month, has been reduced to four .by the-, withdrawal of Mr. R. F; Walls, of Dunedin. :
Mr Walls, the former member - for DunedinNorth who was defeated in the . last election, has withdrawn -because of illness.
The chairman of the National Party East Coast Bays electorate (Mr. R- ■ V. Browne) said he believed Mr Walls would be admitted to hospital with an influenza virus.
He believed Mr Walls had decided to withdraw in case his illness prevented him from properly campaigning should he have been selected as National candidate for the seat. .:
The remaining four candidates are: Dr D. TBrash, an Auckland economist; Mrs Lesley Miller, a. staff member in the Prime Minister’s Department in Wellington; Mr W. W. Rayner, deputy-chairman and secretary of the East Coast Bays electorate; and Mrs Sue. Wood, the party’s woman vice-president;
