Socred ‘taking votes’
PA Wellington The Social Credit Political League is now taking votes from both National and Labour according to the Social Credit Leader (Mr B. C. Beetham). “A vote for Social Credit is, no longer an indirect vote for either National or Labour,” he told a public meeting on Thames. Recent statements by the National and Labour party presidents about next year’s General Election simply involved what amounted to a joint, and’ transparently thin,.attempt to squeeze and reduce Social Credit support by saying a vote for Social Credit would let the other side in, Mr Beetham commented. , . ~ “I do not believe this
tactic will work effectively any longer because New Zealand does not. much like the direction in which National is taking it, and has already rejected the direction in which Labour wants to jtake it." The only difference was that Labour wag' offering the State as the means of salvation, while the National Party was inviting foreigners and. multi-nationals to rescue New Zealanders, from- the country’s economic plight. -The New Zealand economy could not adapt under present economic policies, Mr Beetham said, because money was not available for investing to build pew and better factories and plants and increase and diversify farming production. "It remains more profi-
table to engage in money* lending than to invest in productive enterprise,’’the said.. : -Y-Y The most logical future for New' Zealand was for it to continue to take the “tried and true” path. “The available pool of investment money and credit resources should continue to be in the main for diversified! land-based and added value production of both traditional and uniquelynew New Zealand products, with as little foreign. investment and monopoly control as possible.” ' * Mr Beetham said this would best be done on the basis of individual ownership — outright individual ownership where this / was possible or, where! it was not possible, on :the basis of - co-operative enterprise. -■; - ■"■ ■
