Smelter study
Christchurch should not support Timaru as a future aluminium smelter site until more study of the project’s benefits has been done, city councillors said yesterday. The policy and finance committee said benefits “from a national point of view” should be considered before support was given for any particular site. The Washdyke industrial area' at Timaru has been suggested as one of four possible South Island sites for the proposed smelter. .
In a letter to Christchurch councillors, the Timaru City Council said a smelter pro'viding hundreds of jobs
would indirectly benefit, the entire Canterbury region. But Cr N. G. Hattaway said there had to be a study of what the smelter would mean to the national economy, and more information was needed on the best possible site. Cr Mollie Clark asked where such information could be obtained. If the council wanted to study something, it should actively seek the materials to study. Tire consortium of Fletcher’s, C.S.R. and Alusuisse has been granted an elec-
tricity tariff concession by the Government to enable it to start a smelter in the South Island.
