Shunting ‘went through red light’

PA Wellington One of the signal engineers who checked the Web lington railway signals after the train crash in March said yesterday he was confident the . shunting went through a red light to hit the Porirua unit.

Brian Desmond Nash, a Railways signals engineer, was giving evidence at the depositions hearing of manslaughter charges against the engine driver, Kevin Charles Smith. Mr Nash said all tests showed that the signal should have been showing “stop.” “I am personally confident that that was the position of the signals at that time,” he told the District Court.

Smith faces charges before Judge Bate in relation to the deaths of two passengers in the Porirua unit. Mr Nash outlined tests done by two totally independent teams after the crash. Both teams found nothing wrong, he said.

Mr Nash said that since then, no action had been taken on the equipment which affected signal 99, the signal in question at the hearing. Signalman yelled out, Page 10
