35 a day sterilised last year

Nearly two-thirds of women waiting for gynaecological treatment in Christchurch sought sterilisation, the medical superintend-ent-in-chief of the North Canterbury Hospital Board, Dr R. A. Fairgray, has said.

He was commenting on Health Department figures which show that an average of 35 sterilisations a day were reported to the department last year for an annual total of nearly 13,000. The department said that slightly more women (53 per cent) than men (47 per cent) were sterilised. Many men had the operation performed by general practitioners but women required admission to hospital. . Dr Fairgray said that of the 1159 women on the gynaecological waiting, list in Christchurch, 750 sought sterilisation. This represented much hospital time which was possibly spent at the expense of other gynaecological cases. Sterilisation had been a relatively uncommon procedure 10 or so years ago. Now it was an accepted social phenomenon.
