Nature conservation

Sir, — I am grateful to Annette Kerr for her encouragement. It is, of course, just because the West Coast natural environment is still so beautiful, and retains so much that has been irretrievably lost elsewhere, that people in other parts of the country are very concerned that wiser land use decisions should be taken now than have been made in the past in many other regions. I shall reserve my hearty pats on the back until I know more about the reactions of Annette Kerr’s "practising conservationists” to the United Council’s regional planning scheme, to protection of the Paparoas and of the South Okarito, Waikukupa and Ohinetamatea forests, and to conservation south of the Cook River generally, The West Coast lowland ecosystems are unique. For the sake of future generations, may farsighted counsels prevail. — Yours, etc., ERIC BENNETT, Wellington. August 5, 1980.
