Plea for Taieri aid

PA Timaru Support for the appeal for victims of the T-ieri Plains Hoods was urged yesterday by Mr A. D. Talbot, president of the Counties Association. Mr Talbot, who visited the disaster area last week said he did not think many people realised the seriousness of the problems.

Wafer from the flooding eight weeks ago had now gone, but no stock were on affected farms which were unlikely to be able to carry stock for some time. The farmers had no incomes and some would not be able to return until after the New Year. “They have been billeted off their farms and have no income. It’s worse

than the Abbotsford slip. At least those people still had their jobs,” Mr Talbot said. County Councils throughout New Zealand have been asked to act as collection agencies for the appeal. The. Government has promised a sl-for-$l subsidy up to $lOO,OOO on appeal money raised, and all donations are tax-deductible.
