Vanuatu to deport foreigners
NZPA . Port Vila Twenty-six foreigners alleged .by the Vanuatu Government to be the troublemakers behind the rebels of Espiritu Santo have been given until tomorrow to leave the coun- . try. A Government spokesman said last evening that if they did not leave voluntarily they would be de- ' ported. The group includes two Australians. The others are French citizens. Letters telling them of the Government’s crackdown were delivered to Espiritu Santo at the week-end. The list of names was contained in separate letters from the Prime Minister, Father Lini, last week to the French Ambassador, Mr Yves Rodrigues, arid the Australian High Commissioner, Mr Michael Ovington.- Messrs Rodrigues and Ovington are believed to have promised their" citizens “normal consular protection” but they are unable to prevent the deportation ■ orders from being executed. The tough line by the Vanuatu ’ Government comes as about 200 troops from. Papua. New, Guinea prepare.’to...ideal' with the 'secessionists.- Father Lini yesterday returned from Port .
