Fire at Craigieburn ski-field
Candles and kerosene lamps provided the only lighting at the Craigieburn ski-field last evening, after fire destroyed the generator hut at the field in the afternoon. Skiers had to break the windows of several locked cars to move them away from the blaz.e, which broke out about 3.30 p.m. The fire, fuelled by burning drums of diesel in
the hut, scorched the paintwork and melted plastic fittings in some vehicles. but none was seriously damaged. Using fire extinguishers from nearby huts, skiers were able to prevent the flames from spreading to nearby buildings. The Springfield Volunteer Fire Brigade was called to the field, but ar-
rived too late to save the hut . , ■*■ A mobile . replacement generator was. expected to provide the huts, and other/ facilities at Craigiebum, with electricity by tomorrow, said a member of the club, Dr lan .Squires?. ’..V;
