Codfish. Island wekas

■ . Sir, — Wekas, are s( friendly, valuable species which we all would like to see thriving widely in the South Island. To achieve this, we employ a Wildlife Service in the . Internal Affairs Department. They are celebrating Conservation Week by shooting half the wekas on Codfish Island. Ir< responsible. Should tire service be restaffed? YeS, we agree that Codfish Island may have too many wekas for the welfare of other rarer species but they can be helped just as much by the physical removal of some wekas to other places., Wekas need not be killed. The easiest New Zealand bird to catch is the weka; just make, an unusual sound or display shiny objects and they will come. Put some baubles and food in a cage and the wekas will -walk in ready .to sail home with the wildlife officers for resettlement. We are wild for, life —- not wild against them. — Yours, etc., W. J. MATHEWS, W. MARGARET DENNIS. August 8, 1980.
