Badminton countback
Two contests decided on a countback and ■ a ' default highlighted the first round of section play in the A grade badminton competition at the Skellerup Hall yesterday.
' The closest finish was the section one match between the nearest teams to the topplaced Railway I side, Hagley I and Hagley. 11.
Both had two singles and two doubles wins, and both had a win and a loss in matches which wett to three games. Both won nine individual games but Hagley I had a 10-point advantage when all the points were tallied up! Christchurch beat BryndwrKaiapoi, 10 games to eight, after the score was level at 4-4. Christchurch won by. virtue of taking a game in the men’s singles and the second mixed doubles. Although losing both matches, those games were enough to allow Christchurch to sneak ahead on a countback.
Railway II beat South Brighton I by default, a loss which cuts to one point South Brighton’s lead in section two.
i In Ra!lwayTss-3 win over Knox, Geoff Miller had his first win in three matches this season against Warren Edgecumbe while Eion Kirkland reversed a first round loss to Andrew Duckmanton. In the other matches, South Brighton II beat Hagley 111, 5-3, Mark Chambers having a good win over-.Pras-anna Gulasekharam, and University beat Combined, 'B,-0. Points —Section I: Railway I 143, Hagley II 125, Hagley I 119, Knox 102. Section II: South Brighton 1 94, South Brighton II 93, Railway, II .76, Hagley 111 67.
