Record airport frost
A frost of —l"o.3deg •". recorded at Christchurch Airport' yesterday was the heaviest since records there were started in 1953, according to the Meteorological Service, The previous heaviest frost was —lO.ldeg, recorded in June, 1978.
The frost reading at the Botanic Gardens -yesterday was —B.ldeg, which was
hot, a ’ record low for ' the inner city.
The Meteorological Service said that yesterday’s frost was also one of the longest on record: it had lasted for 14 hours from 8 p.m. on Saturday. Light winds, clear skies, and the cold southerly winds- of last week had been mainly responsible for the heavy degree of frost.
