Australia top yacht
NZPA Newport, Rhode Island The yacht, Australia, encountered her first uneasy passage of her 1980 America’s Cup campaign yesterday, but will still emerge as the top yacht from the. initial phase of the foreign trials.
In the morning, Australia went out in warm, 'Sunny weather and 15 knot breezes to crush Britain’s Lionheart by 2min 265, but in the afternoon, against Sweden’s Sverige, it all went wrong. Australia blew two headsails during the race, as she went down to Sverige by Imin 525.
It was the first time in eight races that Australia had been beaten across the finish line — her only other loss was on a protest by France 111.
However, Australia, with a 6-2 record in the nine-race round-robin series, cannot be dislodged from top position. With one round of racing to go, France has four wins and four losses, and Sverige and- Lionheart have both won three and lost five- ' The final standings will determine the pairings for the best-of-seven foreign semi-finals starting -this week. • •
