West Indies tail frustrates England
NZPA-Reuter Leeds A last-wicket stand of 38 between Michael Holding and Colin Croft completed a frustrating day for England ip the fifth and final cricket test against-the West Indies at Headingley yesterday. , The unexpected runs, most coming from some lusty blows by Holding, who made 35, took the tourists to. 245 —- a-first-innings lead of 102 — and on a pitch of variable bounce, England will be hard-pressed- .to win and square the series. By the close, the England openers, Geoff Boycott and Graham Gooch, had reduced the deficit to 80 in the face of some hostile bowling by Michael Holding and Colin Croft. - '
England’s frustration began with an opening stand of 83 between Gordon Greenidge and Desmond Haynes yesterday morning. ■ln conditions favouring seam, bowlers, they rode their luck to give the tourists the start, they needed. England added to its frustration by spilling a number, of chances but clawed its way back into the match as the day progressed, with .the young Kent pace bowler, Graham Dilley, taking four for 79.
Three of Diiley’s victims came during an inspired spell after tea during which the West Indies slumped from 198 for five to 207 for nine. He sent down a 17-ball burst which brought him the scalps of Deryck Murray, Malcolm Marshall and Alvin
Kallicharran for a cost of four runs;, , The West Indies lead- at this stage was only 64 but Holding prospered against the attacking . field before Chris Old ended the innings.
