Decision of C.J.C. upheld

Appeals against the decision of the Canterbury. Jockey Club’s judicial com-' mittee of ordering Mr M. J. Jones, the part-owner and trainer of Gold Vic, to pay a losing riding, fee to P. M. Dooney because of a disputed riding engagement for the horse in the Hunt : Cup last Tuesday, were heard. by a sub-committee of the Canterbury District Committee at Riccarton on Saturday.

The sub-committee, comprising Mr A. L. Mclntosh (chairman) and Messrs J. Aspinall and D. Stuart, after considering written submissions and also further evidence from Mr Jones and hearing submissions from Dooney, upheld the decision of the C.J.C. committee “that Dooney was unable to produce sufficient evidence to convince the committee that he had a firm riding en-

gagement to ride Gold Vic.”

The sub-committee felt that the C.J.C. judicial committee did not have the power to award the riding fee to Dopney where no broken riding engagement was proved. Therefore Dooney’s appeal failed, and Jones’ appeal was successful. •

The $5O appeal deposit of both Jones and Dooney was refunded.
