A recent statement in Parliament by the Minister of Transport (Mr McLachlan) showed that Slew Zealand ports are well ahead of many overseas ports in terms of the number of containers that are handled an hour. Mr McLachlan’s figures put Port Chalmers weU ahead of a number of Australian and European container ports, and In the lead insofar as New Zealand’s four container ports are concerned, with a handling rate for the first quarter this year of 42.1 containers an hour.
Wellington recorded a rate of 30.6 containers, Auckland 28.6, and Lyttelton 23.8.
But the Lyttelton Harbour Board was quick to point out that Wellington and Auckland each have three container cranes, while Port Chalmers has two, and Lyttelton’s one. On the basis of the container handling rate, Lyttelton comes out well ahead of the other three New Zealand container ports and most of the Australian and European ports as well. ■ On a per-crane basis, Lyttelton’s rate of 23.8 containers an hour ranks well ahead of Port Chalmers’s rate of 21.05 containers per hour and completely overshadows Wellington’s rate per crane of 10-2 an hour and Auckland’s 9.5.
